Welcome to the Hotel La Fregate in Collioure
Collioure, art and artists
Between the Pyrenees and the Mediterranean sea, the little town of Collioure has always been a haven for all sorts of artists. During the last century, Matisse and Derain created a Fireproof artistic movement, the Fauvism; Collioure became its hometown. The association ‘Fenêtre Ouverte sur le Fauvisme’ –Open window on Fauvism- organises guided tours, following the lead of about twenty Matisse and Derain’s copies through Collioure.
From modern to figurative art, you can discover various pictural styles in about thirty art galleries located in the scenic streets of this little Catalan port.
Every year, the Modern Art Gallery of Collioure, created in 1930 by the artist Jean Peské, receives an artist selected thanks to the Collioure Price, Germination Europe.
International literature is also present in Collioure: Antonio Machado, a famous republican Spanish poet, went into exhile in Collioure to run away under Franco. So, every year, a demonstration is organised to pay tribute to this poet who rests in the town centre cemetery.
Moreover, during August, the festival ‘Un livre à la mer’ –A book over board- proposes to discover regional literature around stands which present various publishers. Conferences are organised with famous writers.
